Appellate Experience From the Start

Liz began her career at the appellate level, serving as a judicial law clerk for the Illinois Appellate Court for two years after earning her law degree from John Marshall Law School. In that role, Liz drafted proposed and final opinions and orders, attendedoral arguments and impression conferenceswith justices, and provided them critical research and analysis regarding trial records and legal issues presented on appeal. Armed with that invaluable experience, Liz then worked as a litigator for more than twenty years, handling trial-level matters andappeals, with her practice in the appellate arena growing to the point that, for the past ten years, Liz has focused her practice on providing exceptional appellate representation at the state and federal levels.

Diverse Litigation Experience and Appellate Practice Leadership

Prior to founding Bartolucci Law, LLC in 2015, Liz headed the appellate practice group at O’Hagan, LLC, serving as lead appellate counsel in state and federal civil appeals. Her extensive private practice experience also encompassed advising clients on insurance coverage matters, preparing coverage opinions and reservation-of-rights letters and, when indicated, initiating and prosecuting declaratory judgment actions on insurance coverage issues.

Liz’s litigation work also included professional liability defense work representing attorneys, insurance agents and brokers, physicians, and medical institutions in professional negligence actions in state and federal courts.

Practicing at Sedwick Detert Moran & Arnold in San Francisco, CA, Liz represented national surety companies in commercial surety and bankruptcy litigation, analyzing parties’ claims against performance and payment bonds and resolving disputes in complex contract actions. Liz served as lead counsel at hearings, depositions, mediations, and judicial settlement conferences in state and federal courts representing surety clients.She also represented businesses and owners in commercial litigation and partnership disputes.

Honing Her Skills in the Corporate Setting

Liz honed her skills in crafting persuasive yet accessible legal writing while working in Silicon Valley for FindLaw, Inc. and Justia, Inc.  At FindLaw, she wrote and edited legal content for attorney audiences and the public, including daily federal-court decision summaries, and overviews of legal subjects such as contract, tort, criminal, real estate and family law.  Additionally, responsible for negotiating and coordinating the acquisition and production of legal content, Liz investigated potential licensing and strategic business-partnership opportunities.

While at Justia, Inc., Liz was responsible for supervising and coordinating outside counsel in managing multi-state litigation.

In-House Insurance Counsel

Liz’s analytical proclivities and talents came to the fore during her time working with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, first as a specialty-claims representative, and then as in-house coverage counsel. She evaluated claims and potential claims against insured professionals such as attorneys and accountants, prepared coverage communications to insureds, retained outside counsel, and coordinated the defense resolution of claims. Later, serving as coverage counsel, Liz evaluated coverage issues for claims personnel arising under professional liability, D&O, EPL, and CGL policies, preparing coverage opinions, reservation-of-rights and disclaimer letters, and serving as corporate counsel in declaratory-judgment actions.

A graduate of Michigan State University, Liz is admitted to practice in Illinois and California, is an active member of many professional organizations, and volunteers in her community.
